It takes 4 persons to play Mahjong Solitaire. 144 tiles are set in a 4 row pattern that faces up. The game's goal is to remove all 144 tiles.   • 144 tiles are arranged in a customized four-layer pattern with their faces putting up.
  • A tile is exposed or is in an open position if it can be moved either left or right without disturbing any other tile.
  • The game is played matching up open pairs of identical tiles and removing them from board.
  • The tiles removed gives way to tiles lying under them.
  • The game comes to an end when all the pairs have been removed from the board or no more exposed pairs are left.
  • The tiles underlying the tiles on top cannot be viewed. But with repeated undo options and restarts (some programs allow such functions) a player tends to get more information in future.
  • Mahjong Solitaire can be played alone or with a partner. The goal of such a game will be to add as many pairs and gather as many points as possible. In a double game traditional mahjong tiles can be used. There will be bonuses for removing matched pairs one after the other.

Certain Mahjong Solitaire games have been developed with optional time limit. There are games that offer cheat options and even give out hints to players.
